On the 1st February 1999, the dulcet tones of George Michael and Aretha Franklin blasted out across Mansfield, Ashfield and Bolsover. The area finally had its own radio station.
Mansfield 103.2 are a local commercial radio station that covers Mansfield, Ashfield and Bolsover. Next February, the station will celebrate its 20th birthday.
The station has a team of approximately 20 people, most of whom are freelancers, with full time jobs in other businesses. We only have 5 full time members of staff.
Mansfield 103.2 broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We’re live 6am till 6pm and periodically at weekends.
A typical day in the office, is pretty much like any other office, answering calls, dealing with clients, speaking to listeners, answering e-mails.
The on-air side is always different, our presenters talk about whatever is topical, plus if there’s a major news story that breaks, then we will cover that too.
We also provide outside broadcasts for events and we can do these from pretty much anywhere. In the past, we’ve broadcast from all kinds of locations, including a hot tub and a farm in the middle of nowhere! It’s varied and great fun to be involved in. We also have our mascot, Warren the Radio Rabbit, he also goes along to events as part of our outside broadcast team.
Mansfield 103.2 is one of, if not the last local independent radio station and in the ever-changing landscape of radio, it’s a massive achievement that after nearly 20 years this is still the case. A lot of stations a similar size have had no choice, but to hand back their licenses as they couldn’t make enough money to keep trading. The success of Mansfield 103.2 is down to great leadership from their Managing Director and the Board of Directors.
Mansfield 103.2 is based inside an old school building and they have their very own ghost who occasionally tries to get on the airwaves! You can have a listen to it here. The story goes that the old school caretaker still wanders around the building. Some members of staff have had very strange experiences, but they all like to think that the caretaker is just looking after them!
You can listen to Mansfield 103.2 either by tuning in or by listening online.
