I always think that being a boss, is a bit like being the England Manager, everyone always thinks they can do the job better than the person doing it. Being the boss can be a tough and thankless job! We’ve all had bosses who have been amazing and who we feel have shaped and moulded our careers and then there’s those who have been hopelessly over promoted and you wonder how they manage to get out of bed in a morning let alone manage a team. If you’re a boss, which category do you fall into?
Running your own business is incredibly glamourous, you get to work the hours you choose, take your holidays when you want to…. It’s a sense of freedom you don’t get with other jobs! Oh no wait…. It’s not like that at all! The reality is, running your own business means working long hours, sometimes 7 days a week, being on constant call for your clients and you can end up doing everything! Including the hiring and managing of staff.
Your staff are one of your businesses most important assets, they can really help shape how your company is perceived by its clients as well as contributing to its success. Yet some businesses make the mistake of not trying to retain their staff, they seem happy to ave them off somewhere else, under the illusion that the staff member is bettering their career by earning more money. But surely as a business owner you want the very best staff available working for you and being a part of what you are trying to create?
How much time have you given to putting together a succession plan for your business?
